The concept for certified therapy dogs first arose in 1976. Since then the benefits of certified therapy dogs have been widely recognized. Therefore, over the past 40 years, the use of certified therapy dogs for numerous conditions has grown. Therapy dogs for companionship for elderly persons are recognized to have therapeutic benefits. For instance, petting and talking to therapy dogs can be calming to patients, reduce blood pressure, and can stimulate conversation. In many cases, seniors reminisce about past pets they have had in their lives and become more engaged in conversation.
